MYTH BUSTER #1 You can get a naturopathic medical degree online.
Some prerequisites can be taken online, but the degree itself is hands-on training to become a doctor. Online Naturopathic medical programs are not able eligibile for the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) which is a requirement for regulation and licensing in any jurisdiction that formally recognizes naturopathic doctors. Jurisdictions that regulate naturopathic doctors require completion of an accredited, in-residence, doctoral level program that includes hands-on, supervised, clinical training. Even with hybrid or online learning, the majority of the training is in person and hands on.
MYTH BUSTER # 2. Naturopathic doctors are anti-drug/anti-pharmaceuticals.
Naturopathic doctors are not anti-drug/anti-pharmaceuticals. The Strong and Golden Foundation also supports the use of pharmaceuticals and medication when needed. The the Naturopathic Doctor includes the study of as well as the biochemical pathways and mechanisms of actions, indications, and adverse effects of drugs. Conventional medications and how they interact with supplements, herbs and diet is crucial to the patients care. A naturopathic doctor works with functional medicine treats the whole patient, the person not just the symptoms or the disease. This interaction is the objective; The doctor and patient work as health care team for the best care of their patient. Prescription medications can be an asset in this process. It is important that every patient feel as they are well taken care of.
Remember to advocate for yourself and if you feel that your doctor is not working with you, find another doctor!
